RETAYIR: FUTURE-PROOFING FOR THE ELDERLY
Design Challenge
Globally, the number and proportion of people aging 60 years old and above is increasing.
In a research conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019 it is believed that they are at a billion in population as to date, and the said number is projected to rise to 1.4 billion by 2030 and up 2.1 billion by 2050.
Every human being has the right to live a long and healthy life. But, how will this be possible if the environment is not conducive and cooperating? If one is ageing, movements would be limited, health risks are imminent, access to health and social services and a lot more would be different. As the World Health Organization (WHO) puts it, “working to make the world more age-friendly is an essential and urgent part of our changing demographics.”
In the Philippines, one of the essential members of our society is the Elderly Filipinos for they have contributed and most continues to do so to the development of the country.
According to the recent data from Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), there were 12,336,355 Filipinos aging 60 years old and above as of May 2020, and based on the 2020 census of Population and Housing the total number of senior citizens was placed at 11.31 percent.
Filipinos are known to be tightly knit when it comes to family; this is proven given that a large percentage of children lives with their own parents even at an advance stage of their lives. This culture makes a Filipino family cell big at an average.
As Filipinos prioritize the high culture of respect for their elders, families support their seniors on their basic needs like food, shelter, nutrition, health and medicine among other things in continuation of their self-development.
The question is, are we really providing them what they need given the limitations brought about by ageing? Are we giving them the right environment that would not only uplift their body but their spirits as well? Can we give the same attention given that we are busy as well living our own lives in pursuit of our responsibilities and whims?
Apart from the basic needs, a sense of community, favorable and right forms of physical activity, same wave of social consciousness and utmost respect are some aspects that needs amplified attention. In the Philippines, there are only a handful of homes for the elderly among which only four are being maintained by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) which inspired and pushed HCG to make it a subject to be addressed and advocate upon. Making the world more age friendly would be the goal and the future of which lies in the hands of our children.
This 2023, we challenge our future architects to make a difference. We encourage them to take part in shaping the future and yet keeping the culture alive among us Filipinos. We must create a safe space and environment for our elderly that would be a retreat that is adaptive of the limitations of the human body and yet encouraging that age is just a number.
Ageing is inevitable, limitations might be imminent, but opportunities can be well-planned and created!
CHALLENGE
To challenge the ingenuity of students to make a difference and to take part in shaping the future and yet keeping the culture alive among us Filipinos. The project should create a safe space and environment for our elderly that would be a retreat that is adaptive of the limitations of the human body and yet encouraging that age is just a number.

PRINCIPLES OF FUTURE-PROOFING
- Flexibility and Adaptability – The ability of a building to be flexible and adaptable will enable it to be used despite changes in operational requirements, whereas an inflexible building might have minimal scope for use in the near future.
- Energy Efficiency – An energy efficiency building not only reduces the carbon footprint but also saves a ton of money. The right insulation, heating solutions, lighting, and appliances will make the building warmer and more comfortable for the occupants.
- Technological Responsiveness – The general perspective in terms of technology is the adoption of the latest and most advanced technology.
- Resilience to Climate Change – A future-proof building must be able to function in case of climate change, such as a rise in temperatures or other extreme climatic conditions.
- Legislation – A building designed to meet the future needs must comply with newer standards in order to respond to the legislative changes in the coming years. While usually, such changes tend to impact new buildings, but retrospective changes can affect existing buildings as well.

- Lot requirement: minimum 5 hectares up to 10 hectares.
Mechanics
Eligibility
ArchiNEXT 2023 is open to 3rd and 4th year bona fide Architecture students currently enrolled in any CHED-accredited and recognized College and University in the Philippines. Only one (1) entry per student is allowed (either individual or group).
INDIVIDUAL ENTRY
a 3rd or 4th year bonafide Architecture student; must not belong to any group who will submit an entry for ArchiNEXT.
GROUP ENTRY – FOR GROUPS
- They should be composed of 3 members (maximum). All members should either be 3rd year or 4th year Architecture student.
- They should be coming from one College/University only.
- They should select a Group Name and a Group Leader, who will represent the Group in the Deliberation to determine the final ranking.
Specified Output
- Maximum of five A3 sized bond paper in a portrait/ landscape orientation. Own project title is required.
1st-2nd A3 paper: Project Title, Overall Concept, Location and Vicinity Map, Site Development, Aerial Perspectives, Lot Plan
3rd-5th A3 paper: Detailed Floor Plans, Section, Elevations, Spot and other pertinent details

Softcopy
- Soft copy version must be saved in a CD labeled with entrant’s name/group name and members and school.
- CD must contain the scanned copy of the entry form, scanned copy of the endorsement letter, design entries in high resolution .pdf format or .jpeg format, and full design statement in .docx format.
*Blank or corrupted CD shall be disqualified
Hardcopy
- Download and accomplish ArchiNEXT 2023 Entry Form in www.archinext.ph. Make sure that it is legibly filled up and signed by either the Dean of the College of Architecture or Chair of the College of Architecture or the UAPSA President.
- Attach Endorsement Letter signed by the Dean of the College of Architecture or Chair of the Department of Architecture ONLY.
- Submitted envelope must be labeled with identification* containing the accomplished entry form with signature (with complete details), design entries in A3 Paper or Board (maximum of four sheets), printed design statement (short bond paper), scanned school Identification Card (front and back), and the CD containing the soft copy of your requirements and entry.
*Identification (name and school) in the entries shall strictly be at the back of each entry and design statement, and labeled in the envelope and CD. - Upon completion of the requirements, send envelope containing both hard & soft copy through LBC addressed to:

SCREENING PROCESS
Below is the new process of screening all entries for ArchiNEXT 2023:
- PRE SCREENING – ArchiNEXT Team will check if the entrant/group completed his/her/their requirements for the entry to qualify.
- INITIAL SCREENING – Judges will have to grade the entries. After all the scores have been collected, a certain number of qualified entries will compose the “Magic Number” or the finalists for the Final Screening.
- FINAL SCREENING – Judges will be critiquing the entries in the Live Final Screening to determine the ff:

- Special Awardees
- DELIBERATION – All scores from the Final Screening will be back to zero. Individual Finalists and Group Leaders will be invited to personally defend their entries to determine the Final Ranking. Each will be given a maximum of 20 minutes to present their ideas to the Judges. Mechanics will be given to all finalists after the Final Screening Process.
Reminders
- In participating, the candidate agrees to have their names and/or designs published in a third-party publication or in any other medium without extra fee or charge. Likewise, all entries shall become the property of Hocheng Philippines Corporation.
- Plagiarism of any form shall not be accepted and will be considered disqualified.
- Judges’ decision is final.
- Hocheng Philippines Corporation shall also shoulder the travel cost and accommodation of competition winners only residing in the provinces (outside Metro Manila with at least 4 hours of travel by land).
- Tickets and accommodation are not convertible to cash.

Criteria for judging
Design Excellence/ Architectural Planning – 50%
The design must be visually appealing while adhering to the contest theme and guidelines.
Design Sustainability and Eco- Friendliness – 30%
Aside from visual appeal, the structures have to be carefully planned for a greener and sustainable environment.
Innovativeness – 20%
Unique and out of the box ideas incorporated on the design/ facilities that promoted culture of the specific location chosen.
