Banaag

Subic, a charming coastal town in Zambales, Philippines, has always been inseparable from the sea. For generations, fishing has been more than just a livelihood for the people of Subic—it’s been a way of life, a tradition passed down through families, and a cornerstone of the town’s identity. The community’s deep connection to the water has shaped its culture and economy, creating a bond as enduring as the tides.

But this close relationship with the sea comes with challenges. Subic faces growing threats like coastal erosion, stronger storms, and the undeniable effects of climate change. These challenges have become a wake-up call, highlighting the need for solutions that protect both the environment and the people who call this place home.

In response to these challenges, Banaag—meaning beam of light—was envisioned as a beacon of hope. This park isn’t just a physical space; it’s a symbol of resilience and community strength. It’s a place where people can unite and celebrate what makes Subic unique. Inspired by the town’s fishing heritage, the park’s design features details like structures resembling fishing nets and boats and a central lighthouse.

The lighthouse stands tall as a guide for fishermen returning home and a reminder that hope and determination light the way forward, even in tough times. More than its aesthetic appeal, Banaag focuses on sustainability. The park uses renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind turbines, collects rainwater, and employs innovative systems to manage water use efficiently.

Visitors can learn about these eco-friendly practices through interactive displays, turning a simple walk in the park into an opportunity to grow their awareness of environmental care. Banaag serves as a social hub and an eco-park. Children may play freely, families can have picnics beneath the trees, and festivals can fill the air with laughter and music.

It serves as a reminder of everyone’s common ancestry by bringing Subic’s rich customs and tales to life. Banaag is the epitome of Subic: a community that cherishes its history rises to the occasion, and looks forward to the future with optimism.
